1 Free Agent Every AFC Team Should Sign
We can't believe we are already here but tomorrow NFL free agency officially opens. This has off-season already has shown it will go down as one of the craziest in recent memory with so many cuts all over the place as teams are gearing up for the cap lower due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. This is one free agent that every AFC team should look to add to make them their teams better. These aren't necessarily the top 16 free agents but just good fits for certain teams.
New York Jets: Shaq Barrett, Edge Rusher // The Jets are among the top 5 teams for most cap space in the league so expect a wild free agency from them. A player I think they need to go all out for is Shaq Barrett from the defending Super Bowl champ Buccaneers. The Jets have no one off the edge that is any good and new defensive minded HC Robert Saleh is going to want to change that. The Jets can probably offer Barrett more than anyone and I really think he should be their top target heading into tomorrow.
Miami Dolphins: Carl Lawson, Edge Rusher // Just like the Jets, the Miami Dolphins have a ton of cap space and a need for a good edge rusher. Give me Lawson to the Dolphins. The team is up and coming and they barely missed the playoffs this past season. After trading one of their better rushers today in SHAQ Lawson, the Dolphins should now go out and target another Lawson (Carl). They can pay him the pretty penny he deserves after leading the league in pressures.
New England Patriots: Kenny Golladay, Wide Receiver // This isn't just a player I think the Pats should sign, I almost am sure they will sign him. The fit makes too much sense. New England needs a WR1 so badly and turning down a big contract from Bill Belichick is something I can't see Golladay doing. The Pats are a legendary franchise and Golladay is a top 15 WR in the league without question. This will be one of the biggest signings in free agency.
Buffalo Bills: Carlos Dunlap, Edge Rusher // While Dunlap going back to Seattle on a cheaper deal after being cut by them last week remains a likely option for him, the Bills are an outside team that I think should sign him. One of the most productive pass rushers of the last 10 years, Dunlap was finally traded out of Cinncy last season to Seattle where he instantly was their best rusher and sparked a lackluster pass rushing unit into quickly becoming one of the league's best. The Bills could really use a player like him and I wouldn't be shocked to see him joining the squad up in Buffalo.
Los Angeles Chargers: Leonard Floyd, Outside Linebacker // JKFOOTBALL has projected this signing for weeks now, and we stay on the bandwagon. It makes so much sense. Floyd had by far the best season of his young career with the Rams last year under defensive coordinator Brandon Staley who is now the Chargers new head coach. He wouldn't have to change cities or even coaches. This would be a great signing for the Chargers.
Denver Broncos: William Jackson, Cornerback // The Broncos are in a weird spot right now, but nonetheless, cornerback is by far their biggest position of need. A player we think they should go out and sign is Bengals corner William Jackson. Being one of the best corners in the FA class along with being 28 years old, he will have a big market, but the Broncos need him and should try and win a bidding war for him.
Kansas City Chiefs: Melvin Ingram, Edge Rusher // Man I would LOVE this fit. I think the second free agency opens, the Chiefs should call up Ingram's agent. The Chiefs are in need of an edge rusher that can play off the opposite side of $100 million dollar man Frank Clark. If they could poach their arch rival LA Charger's stud rusher in the process of adding at a position of need, they would jump at the idea of it. This would be one of the best signings of FA if the Chiefs do this.
Las Vegas Raiders: Casey Heyward, Cornerback // Just a couple days after being cut by the Chargers of the AFC West, I think Heyward will join the Raiders of the same division. If there is one player the Raiders should go out and sign, Heyward should be it. At age 31, he is older, but man does he still produce. The Raiders need to get a lot better in the back end of their defense and adding a vet who still brings great production would be big for them. Heyward reunites with former Chargers defensive coordinator Gus Bradley in Vegas.
Jacksonville Jaguars: Trent Williams, Offensive Tackle // Probably the no. 1 free agent heading into the open market tomorrow, Williams will have a huge market. At this stage in his career, Williams is probably going to try and get the most money he can making Jacksonville one of the most likely landing spots for him. The Jags who are in position to draft generational talent Trevor Lawrence at pick 1 in the draft should spend as much as it takes to bring in one of the best tackles in NFL history to protect their young QB's blindside. I would love this move for the Jags.
Indianapolis Colts: Curtis Samuel, Wide Receiver/Running Back // The Colts who are a top 5 team in the league in terms of cap space along with their rival Jaguars are in position to make multiple big ticket free agent adds this off-season. I think one player they really need to consider signing is the versatile Curtis Samuel from Carolina. Samuel did it all on offense for CAR last season, racking up receiving and rushing yards and with all the money the Colts have, they have the ability to spend some of it on a weapon that could benefit their entire offense. Don't rule them out for Trent Williams either...
Houston Texans: Aldon Smith, Edge Rusher // The team set up the worst for the future isn't going to have players lining up to play for them, but I think a guy they should try and bring in is Smith who played in Dallas last year. After being out of the league for multiple years due to off the field issues, Smith came back and for the first month of the season was on a tear and led the league in sacks. He fell back down to earth but that was enough to show he was worthy of getting another contract from someone. The Texans are desperate and I think would be willing to throw money at a potential JJ Watt replacement.
Tennessee Titans: Kendrick Bourne, Wide Receiver // While this might not seem like a super exciting add for Tennessee, it's still a player I think they really should try and go out and sign. With not much money and multiple good impending free agents, the Titans are likely to lose their stud WR2 Corey Davis. They will need some other targets other than AJ Brown for Ryan Tannehill. Bourne has improved each year in San Fransisco and when you watch their games he consistently makes super tough catches at huge points in the game. A 3rd down conversion machine. The Titans could use that and Bourne isn't likely to even cost very much. This would be an under the radar great add for them.
Cincinnati Bengals: Joe Thuney, Offensive Guard // The Bengals quietly have the cap space to make some serious moves this off-season. I expect them to call up Thuney's agent right away when FA opens and to tell him that they will offer more than anyone else for the top guard in FA. Protecting Joe Burrow is their main priority, nothing comes close to it. They are likely to get a great O-lineman at pick 5 in the draft but that alone isn't enough. Thuney is one of the very best pass blocking guards in the league and the Bengals are sure to make a run at him. The Bengals absolutely need to sign Thuney.
Cleveland Browns: Matt Judon, Edge Rusher // The Browns have a stacked roster and yet somehow still have a bit of cap space to work with this off-season. One player they really should sign is edge rusher from their division rival Matt Judon. They are reported to have great interest in him and they have the funds to make a big time offer to him. The Browns are looking pretty nice at almost all positions on their team but could use another great rusher to pair with Myles Garrett. Judon should be their first call when FA opens tomorrow.
Pittsburgh Steelers: Leonard Fournette, Running Back // The Steelers don't have a ton of cap, but they have enough to make a few moves. One player they really should sign is Leonard Fournette. Their run game was awful last year and might really have been the reason of their downfall. Fournette is coming off of an amazing 2020 season in which he played a crucial part in Tampa Bay's super bowl run. The Steelers should see how he played and his unique size/speed combination and jump at the opportunity to bring him in.
Baltimore Ravens: Will Fuller V, Wide Receiver // The Ravens look to be a receiver or two away from getting back to the conversation of top tier Super Bowl contending teams. They just didn't have enough at the position last season to give Lamar Jackson any options down the field. Enter Will Fuller. One of the league's most explosive deep threats. When on the field, Fuller is a star who can take the top off of any defense. I expect Fuller to be in high demand but the Ravens have what it takes to bring him in. They need to do it!
