Free Agency Day 1/2 Winners and Losers
We are only a day and a half into free agency and so much has already happened. The league is shifting like it does every March which all the moves that have happened. We aren't going to talk about every single move because there were so many big ones but we will go over the winners and losers!
Also keep in mind, with FA just starting and so many great players still available, teams in the losers could easily break even or even become winners. This is just from a day 1-2 of FA standpoint.
WINNERS
New England Patriots
Current Moves: Signed EDGE Matt Judon, WR Nelson Agholor, WR Kendrick Bourne, TE Jonnu Smith, TE Hunter Henry, CB Jalen Mills, DT Davon Godchaux, QB Cam Newton
What a wild first day and a half of FA for New England. Most people didn't think they would do much per usual but boy did they prove everyone wrong. They went out and spent more money in one day than in the team's past 10 years. These weren't just small signings either. They got one of the best edge rushers in the league in Matt Judon. They got a pair of super talented veteran WR's that will give Cam Newton go to weapons. They also signed the top TWO tight ends off the board in Jonnu Smith and Hunter Henry. They might try and go back to their dominant days of having Gronk and Aaron Hernandez at TE. Bill Belichick wasn't messing around.
Jacksonville Jaguars
Current Moves: Signed CB Shaq Griffin, WR Marvin Jones, WR Phillip Dorsett, RB Carlos Hyde, TE Chris Manhertz, S Rayshawn Jenkins, CB Sidney Jones and traded for DT Malcolm Brown
Another massive first 2 days for an AFC team, this time it's the Jags. They have a ton of cap space and put it to work right away. Their biggest move was locking up the top FA corner in Shaq Griffin who already has a pro bowl to his name after just 4 years in the league. He will be their CB1 to pair with CJ Henderson. They also reeled in another massive name in WR Marvin Jones who will pair up with DJ Chark to give Trevor Lawrence some weapons down in Florida. I expect more moves coming from this team as new HC Urban Meyer has players from all over interested in playing for him.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Current Moves: Re-signing WR Chris Godwin, LB Lavonte David, EDGE Shaq Barrett, TE Rob Gronkowksi
After winning the Super Bowl, most teams would head off into the off-season ready to run it back. That wasn't the case for this Bucs team. 4 of their biggest contributers from their Super Bowl run were set to hit the market along with another 3 key role players (Ndamukong Suh, Antonio Brown, Leonard Fournette). The Bucs somehow have made it work with the cap and have brought back their main four on lucrative extensions to keep them in Tampa with Tom Brady. It remains to be seen what happens with the remaining 3 but even if they don't get any of them back, the fact that they kept all these key players puts them in the winners column automatically.
New York Jets
Current Moves: Signed EDGE Carl Lawson, WR Corey Davis, LB Jarrad Davis. RUMORED likely to get WR Kenny Golladay
The Jets may have a really bright future. With an amazing new HC and tons of cap heading into this off-season, the Jets were poised to make a splash in FA, and they have done that so far. They have taken two of the biggest names off of the board in edge rusher Carl Lawson and WR Corey Davis. They will be 2 massive contributors for them in the future. They also still have a ton of cap and are rumored to be in the drivers seat to sign the best WR in the FA class in Kenny Golladay. It would be a MAJOR win if they get him too. Pairing all this talent with likely 2nd overall pick QB Zach Wilson could be the start of something great for Gang Green.
Joe Thuney, Offensive Guard, Chiefs
Signed a 5 yr-$80 million dollar deal with the Chiefs
Thuney is a player I want to give a special shout-out to for what he accomplished. He became the highest paid guard in the league like a lot of people predicted for him, but what they didn't see coming was with the Chiefs. A lot of people thought he would settle for the massive payday from a lesser team with more money but that wasn't the case. Thuney didn't have to settle for money or team greatness as he arguably is now on the best team in football. A+ work from Thuney and his agent.
LOSERS
Seattle Seahawks, Atlanta Falcons, Philadelphia Eagles
All are yet to make a move
These 3 teams are the lone teams in the league to sign any new faces to their teams. Out of these 3, Seattle really is the biggest loser thus far. They have had reported interest in many players just to see them sign elsewhere. In a crucial make or break off-season with QB Russell Wilson, they need to go out and get great players. They haven't even added A player yet. On top of this, they have lost key contributor CB Shaq Griffin to Jacksonville. A rough start for these 3 teams who hopefully have better FA days ahead of them.
Las Vegas Raiders
WHAT ARE THEY DOING
In the coming days before FA, the Raiders cut 2 of their starting O-lineman to save cap and traded another one to New England. Now they are down to just one of their 2020-21 O-line starters as they cut former Pro Bowl center Rodney Hudson today. What are you DOING Jon Gruden and Mike Mayock?! Defense was your team issue, the O-line was great. You already had cap to make defensive moves. Now their o-line is in shambles and their D still is in shambles. I do not know what they are doing in Vegas and even though they signed stud edge rusher Yannick Ngakoue, it does not make up for this terrible start.
FA Wide Receivers
No market right now
The free agent WR's have really had a rough start to FA. Aside from really Corey Davis alone, none of the top wideouts have signed. That includes elite WR Kenny Golladay and young stars Will Fuller V and Juju Smith-Schuster. I'm sure eventually teams will be willing to pay them what they deserve but for now, I'm not really sure why haven't been snatched up yet.
Chicago Bears
QB Situation
The Bears are not off to a great start either. Star WR and franchise tag recipient Allen Robinson does not sound like he wants to play for the Bears again and now their QB situation has gotten even worse. The Bears reportedly put all their eggs in the 'trading for Russell Wilson or Deshaun Watson basket' and have gotten screwed. Both teams said they weren't moving their QBs so the Bears turned around and overpaid Andy Dalton on a one year deal. Looks like the Bears front office could be cleared out after this season which doesn't look too hopeful.
