All-Still Available FA Team
We have hit the dog days of the NFL off-season and now it's just going to be a struggle for football fans as we have over 100 days until the season starts. Just because not as much is happening right now in the NFL doesn't mean that there isn't more excitement to come before the season. Today, we put together a team of the best remaining free agents to showcase the talent still on the board that will likely wind up with good clubs in coming weeks.
QB: Nick Mullens, from SF, 26 years old
There are a couple decent names at QB still available but we decided to give Nick Mullens the nod. After a couple seasons in San Fransisco, the team didn't bring him back with Jimmy G on the roster and new top pick Trey Lance. Mullens filled in many times over the past two years for the Niners when Jimmy G was down and he actually played pretty well sometimes. It could have just been a product of the Niners' amazing offensive system, but he's worth a flier for a backup job somewhere considering he is also still so young. Honorable Mention: Robert Griffin III
RB: Todd Gurley, from ATL, 27 yo
Imagine hearing that Todd Gurley would be an unsigned player with little interest in May 2021 a couple years ago. Gurley started his career off as well as any player could but a terrible series of knee problems has had Gurley looking like a shell of his former self. Now, Gurley faces the possibility of being out of the league after looking like he could be a future hall of famer one day. For the cheap price he would cost at this point in FA, he is worth a flier to be a nice change of pace back on a needy team. A Falcons reunion could make sense for both parties. Honorable Mention: Le'Veon BellWR1: Dede Westbrook, from JAX, 28 yo
The available WR market is pretty bad, but Westbrook remains by far the best option left. A Heisman candidate in college, we all know Westbrook is a super speedy and explosive outside threat, but he has never really gotten the opportunities at the NFL level. Per sources, the Chiefs, Bengals, and Vikings are all interested in Westbrook. If he can find a role as team's WR3, he could have a nice season that could set him up for a decent payday next off-season.
WR2: Golden Tate, from NYG, 33 yo
The second best WR option in my opinion is Golden Tate. As a slot WR, Tate still could be considered one of the NFL's best. He is undersized but he makes it work in the slot. A savvy veteran that Tate is could be a major asset on a WR-needy team. Tate is also still one of the league's best after the catch wideouts and could be a legit weapon for a contending team. Before Seattle's WR heavy draft/UDFA period, I thought they could be major contenders to bring Tate back. Honorable Mentions: Dez Bryant, Tavon Austin
TE: Trey Burton, from IND, 30 yo
At this point in FA, a TE like Burton still being available is actually somewhat surprising. Burton was a player many thought would break out after how well he played for the Eagles in their Super Bowl win over the Patriots a few years back, but he didn't pan out. After short stints with Chicago and then Indianapolis, Burton finds himself without a team. I think come training camp or if we see a stud TE go down with injury, Burton will be a team's first call. At age 30, he still has time to become a Pro Bowl level TE before the end of his career. Could be a low risk, high reward signing at this point. Honorable Mention: Tyler Eifert
Offensive Line (5 best available): Mitchell Schwartz (from KC, 31 yo), Trai Turner (from LAC, 28 yo), Dennis Kelly (from TEN, 31 yo), Austin Reiter (from KC, 30 yo), Isaiah Wilson (from TEN/MIA, 22 yo)
These were the 5 best O-lineman free agents still available in my opinion. Schwartz is the one I am absolutely baffled is not signed. An All-Pro very recently at one of the most valued positions in the entire NFL (tackle), Schwartz is only 31. That's somewhat young for a stud tackle in the NFL. Whoever ends up with him is going to get a steal. Turner is another guy that could end up being such a good signing. He is still 2 years under 30 and is a former pro bowler. He wasn't amazing in LA last year but we know he has high quality play in him because we've seen it. Dennis Kelly is another really good veteran tackle option and could be a plug and play type player for a team that needs help at tackle. Austin Reiter is a really quality pass blocker, not so good in the run game. There are still plenty of teams that need an upgrade at center and I fully expect Reiter to be signed in the coming weeks. Finally, Isaiah Wilson is the wildcard. A first round pick just a year ago, he has major character issues and has only played a couple of downs in the NFL. He was traded to the Dolphins for next to nothing this off-season and then was cut quickly. If a team can sign him and help him get past his own issues, he could be a major steal. He's just 22 and has first round talent. Honorable Mentions: Russell Okung, Nick EastonEDGE Rusher 1: Melvin Ingram, from LAC, 32 yo
The defensive side of the football still has a ton of remaining FA talent on the board. You can see that from the get go with Melvin Ingram being available. Sure, he has trouble staying healthy, but when he is, he is so good. When healthy, he has produced every year. It's just the injuries that always pile up with him. At this point, you wouldn't be paying him really anything so you can easily risk him getting hurt because it won't cost you much and if he is healthy he could instantly be certain team's BEST edge rusher.
EDGE Rusher 2: Olivier Vernon, from CLE, 30 yo
Another stud vet rusher is available. Vernon, the former pro bowler, could be another massive add right now. He is only just 30 years old so he still has production left in him. He could instantly spark a team's pass rush. Considered an elite rusher just a few years ago, Vernon isn't that far off from that time. I think he will be a quality pickup for a contending team at some point during this off-season or into the actual season. Honorable Mentions: Ryan Kerrigan, Justin Houston
DT: Geno Atkins, from CIN, 33 yo
While he might be a bit older than you would like out of a quality DT, I can assure you that it doesn't matter too much for a guy like Geno. Atkins has only been one of the best interior D-lineman of the last decade in the run and pass rushing game. He could be a welcome addition to a squad to bolster their defensive line. I am almost sure a team will come calling for him before the season starts. There should be interest in the former All-Pro player. Honorable Mention: Sheldon Richardson
LB1: K.J. Wright, from SEA, 32 yo
What a disappointing off-season for the vet. Even at the old age (for an LB) of 31, it didn't matter for Wright. He is coming off his best season of his entire storied career in which he was a tackle machine and a beast in the run game and had some nice pass reads. He was in line for a handsome payday but it never came. Now a return at some point during the off-season to Seattle seems pretty likely by every passing day. This man still has a lot of football left in the tank.
LB2: Kwon Alexander, from NO, 26 yo
This could be a major low risk/high reward signing. Just 2 seasons off of signing a massive contract with the Niners and looking like one of the best young LBs in the game, Alexander is a free agent. He has fought injury a ton over the past few seasons and was then traded at the deadline to New Orleans last season before an ankle injury ended his season. Now as he rehabs that injury, he doesn't have a team to call home. We have seen how good he can be and he is still just 26 years old. A team HAS to take a flier on him. The upside is just too great here. Honorable Mentions: De'Vondre Campbell, Rueben Foster
DB1: Richard Sherman, from SF, 33 yo
The DB position group might be the deepest for good players that are still available. Sherman is no exception to this. Just a year removed from an All-Pro season with the Niners, injuries really derailed his 2020 campaign and now is part of the reason he remains unsigned right now. However, we know there is interest between multiple teams and Sherman. The 49ers (his most recent team) and the Seahawks (his original team) seem to be vying for his services. The Saints and Jets seem to also remain possible options to land his services. Sherman may be somewhat old for the CB spot, but could still be a productive veteran on one of these teams along with helping younger players come along at the position.
DB2: Brian Poole, from NYJ, 29 yo
See?! This is how deep the DB spot is right now. Brian Poole who is one of the NFL's best slot corners is still available. Poole is one of those players that stuffs the stat sheet. He has been a big contributor for the Jets and Falcons in recent years and now somehow finds himself still available in May. There is reported interest between him and the Jets for a potential return so I don't think we will see him on the streets for much longer.
DB3: Steven Nelson, from PIT, 28 yo
This could be an absolutely massive add for a team right now. At just 28 years old, Nelson still is in his prime at one of the most sought after positions in football. He is also coming off a really good season where he was Pittsburgh's no. 1 corner. The league's best defense's top corner. Think about that. He's a free agent. There are a number of teams right now that he could join and walk in as their best corner. I don't know why he was cut or why he is still available but a team should eventually sign him and they will be overjoyed with the results he brings in. Honorable Mentions: Malik Hooker, Bashaud Breeland, Dre Kirkpatrick
