Top Fits for the 10 Best Remaining Free Agents
Even two weeks into free agency, with all of the madness that is going on around the league, many great FAs remain. Today we are going to predict a good fit for each of them and what a deal could maybe look like.
Odell Beckham Jr., Wide Receiver (from LAR) → Kansas City Chiefs
Potential Deal: 2 yrs/$26 million
Other Potential Fits: LAR, GB, IND, CLE
Julio Jones, Wide Receiver (from TEN) → Green Bay Packers
Potential Deal: 1 yr/$10 million
The Packers are in a similar spot to the Chiefs. They are a top tier Super Bowl contender with a top tier QB at the helm, but they just traded their star WR for draft picks as well. With Davante Adams gone, this offense is going to look a lot different. As it stands at the current moment, just Randall Cobb and Amari Rodgers sit on the depth chart. That cannot and will not stand for the Packers who want to be a top notch SB contender again this season. While more moves will still need to be made, one that I see happening is Julio Jones coming to town on a nice, incentive-laden one year deal. Jones was surprisingly cut by the Titans and now gets to choose his team for the first time in his career. I think there is going to be interest league-wide, and he may even get better offers than this, but I think the prospect of catching passes from Aaron Rodgers will be too much for Jones who will slot in as their WR1.
Other Potential Fits: IND, NE, KC, ATL
Bobby Wagner, Middle Linebacker (from SEA) → Los Angeles Rams
Potential Deal: 2 yrs/$22 million
As much as this hurts for a variety of reasons as I'm a Seahawks fan, at the current moment, this feels about what might happen. Wagner has garnered much interest around the league following his unceremonious departure from Seattle, and is clearly taking his time to pick his next team. While the Broncos and Cowboys seem like obvious fits, Wagner has seemingly taken a good amount of interest in joining the surprisingly LB needy Rams. He has completed an official visit with him and now both sides could be negotiating. I'm not sure with Wagner, but it feels as if for a decently paying deal over two years, he could be headed to his formal longtime rival.
Other Potential Fits: DEN, DAL, JAX
Tyrann Mathieu, Safety (from KC) → Dallas Cowboys
Potential Deal: 3 yrs/$42 million
I think one of the bigger surprises of FA is that Tyrann Mathieu is still available. It feels pretty clear to me that Mathieu is also taking his time to pick his next team, but I do also think he is waiting for the right offer (price) to come available. The Cowboys make too much sense. While it is beyond me for why every player seemingly wants to play for the Cowboys, there is no denying that. Mathieu is certainly interested in heading to Dallas. Also, cap space is pretty much a myth. Dallas can create this money if they need to and I see them doing it to lock up a big time leader in the secondary for the next three years.
Other Potential Fits: NYJ, DET, CHI
Stephon Gilmore, Cornerback (from CAR) → San Francisco 49ers
Potential Deal: 2 yrs/$16 million
I said before FA that Gilmore was going to sign with the Niners, and I'm sticking with it. Somehow Gilmore is another guy that has lasted this long, but I also think he is waiting for the right fit and offer. While he is 31, he has a ton left in the tank, and the Niners need CB so badly. Getting an experienced and seasoned vet like Gilmore in that secondary would be a major boon for a team that was a hair short of the Super Bowl this past season. This deal makes a lot of sense for both sides.
Other Potential Fits: NE, CIN, LV
Will Fuller V, Wide Receiver (from MIA) → Cleveland Browns
Potential Deal: 1 yr/$10 million
Other Potential Fits: KC, GB, NE
Duane Brown, Left Tackle (from SEA) → Seattle Seahawks
Potential Deal: 1 yr/$9 million
I think Brown is going to look around (like he clearly has been) and realize that he should just return to Seattle. While he is certainly getting up there in age, he remains one of the better pass protectors in the league with at least 1-2 years left in him. I expect teams like Carolina to go after him, but I don't see why he'd settle for them when they are in even worse shape than Seattle. He knows Seattle well and has enjoyed his time there, I expect Pete Carroll and co. to give him a generous one year offer like this to return and potentially finish out a Hall of Fame career in the Pacific Northwest.
Other Potential Fits: CAR, CIN, CHI
→ Cleveland Browns
Potential Deal: 1 yr/$12 million
The annual Clowney classic. Waiting weeks, sometimes even months to make his signing decision. Aside from his early years in Houston, Clowney is coming off of the best season he's had since in Cleveland. Lining up opposite Myles Garrett made life a whole lot easier for him and he produced (8+ sacks in 2021). While I think he's waiting to get the price he likes, I can't see him leaving Cleveland.
Other Potential Fits: PIT, SEA, BAL
Jarvis Landry, Wide Receiver (from CLE)
→ Indianapolis Colts
Potential Deal: 1 yr/$10 million
It's no secret that the Colts need WR help, and while they haven't done anything to help that need since the start of FA, they can redeem themselves with a late signing like Landry. I think they will be in on the Julio Jones and OBJ "sweepstakes" but I see both of those other players ending up elsewhere. With that being said, Landry becomes their next biggest target. A savvy veteran, Landry is an elite route runner with polished catching skills and leadership. Slotting in right next to Michael Pittman Jr., adding him could give Matt Ryan a great receiving core to go along with the Colts' awesome offensive line and monster in the backfield that is Jonathan Taylor.
Other Potential Fits: GB, CLE, NO, BAL
JC Tretter, Center (from CLE) → Minnesota Vikings
Potential Deal: 2 yrs/$17 million
I feel like Tretter being released from the Browns got lost in the shuffle of all of the other huge moves that have went down in the past week or so. Tretter quietly has been one of the best interior offensive lineman in the NFL for the past few years now, and at still a somewhat young age for an OL, you'd think he would have already caught on with a team now. Since the interest for him has been shockingly small, I can see the Vikings handing out some money to him to come play inside for them and beef up a weak offensive line. The Vikings have been active under their new front office and this would be just another great move for them as they try and return to the playoffs in a much weakened NFC this season.
