TYREEK HILL TO MIAMI!! Grading Yet ANOTHER Blockbuster Trade
I'm running out of headlines here. I can't even begin to continue describing how crazy this off-season has been and it's just entering full swing. After the three massive deals that went down yesterday which we discussed, ANOTHER has come into fruition in the past 24 hours. While apparently this has been building for a few weeks, it was announced that Hill was likely to be on the move after contract negotiations stalled out with the Chiefs. Within about an hour of that, Tyreek Hill was a Miami Dolphin. Let's discuss the trade and grade both team's returns.
The TradeDolphins receive:
-WR Tyreek Hill
Chiefs receive:
-2022 first round pick (no. 29 overall)
-2022 second round pick (no. 50 overall)
-2022 fourth round pick
-2023 fourth & sixth round picks
Dolphins - A
Mike McDaniel has seriously brought the juice to this franchise. Since he was brought in as HC, the Dolphins have been wheeling and dealing and now look like one of the most improved rosters in the NFL. I love this trade for Miami, props to them for being aggressive and making sure it was them ending up with Hill to enter the race for one of 7 playoff berths in the loaded AFC. Five draft picks might seem like a lot for a WR who then you had to go extend on a mega-deal (worth $30 million a year for 4 years), but guys like Hill don't really EVER come around, and you have to look at the capital a little closer. You only lose one first, and it's a late one, and while you also lose your second, that is really it. The rest of the picks are not very significant meaning that the 'Fins will still have pretty much their entire chest of picks in 2023.
Moving back to Hill the actual player, this is going to be fun in Miami. The team might be the fastest team in football. Hill will slot right in at WR1 in this offense and will go alongside rising Sophomore WR Jaylen Waddle who was amazing as a rookie and looks like one of the fastest wideouts in football in his own right. Some might even call Waddle a Tyreek Hill Jr.
Hill is the fastest player in NFL history. You can't change my mind on that. He is also an amazing deep ball catcher and an elusive route runner. It is not just speed with him. With innovative new offensive coach Mike McDaniel running the show, figuring out how to stop both Hill and Waddle along with Ced Wilson, Mike Gesicki, Devante Parker, Preston Williams, Raheem Mostert, and Chase Edmonds is going to be nearly impossible. The great thing also is for this team is that if Tua can't succeed even with one of the best offenses around him in the NFL, then they can go QB next year as they still have a ton of cap space (somehow) and will have all of their early draft picks to work with. This move was a home run in my opinion for Miami who could be one of the best offenses in the entire NFL all of the sudden.
Chiefs - D
Oof. I don't like this one bit for KC. The main motive for this move was obviously salary cap and contract negotiations. The team did not want to trade their star, 6-time pro bowl WR who is just 28 and in the midst of his prime if they did not have to. However, they felt they had to with Hill commanding over $30M per year and the team already paying large sums to Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, Frank Clark, Chris Jones, Joe Thuney, Orlando Brown, the list goes on. Still, for a rare rare RARE talent like Hill, you make it work. Hill was what made this offense tick. He incited fear in opposing defenses who knew they couldn't go man with Hill on the outside paired with the arm of Patrick Mahomes and then Travis Kelce working the intermediate. Now, that advantage is just gone.
The Chiefs got a decent haul back, but I also would have wanted more. Again, this isn't just a top tier WR, this is the best of the best in terms of a playmaker who you will probably never come across again. I'll say it again, I think Hill is the fastest player in NFL history. That doesn't really ever come around. Some say Hill has clocked 40s in the 4.1 range. I get that with two late firsts, they can go draft a good WR replacement, but no one is going to compare to Hill. For a Chiefs team looking to get right back to the Super Bowl after being blown out two years ago in the big game and then blowing it against Cinncy this past year, this move makes even getting to the title game highly unlikely. Outside of Patrick Mahomes, this was your best player.
Again, this is a fine haul, but this move is going to set the Chiefs back a bit and they are going to regret it. Call me crazy, but I'd have kept Hill over Kelce if I was KC. That's how important I think he is to this offense. They are primed to take a step back with the more man looks they will see now. Mahomes is going to have to adjust, and I'm sure he will, but in a loaded AFC (and AFC West), the Chiefs can't really afford to be taking major steps back right now. This move knocks them off of the top tier contenders for me. If it came down to money, they should have ousted a guy like Thuney or Clark or Brown Jr. instead of Hill. I don't really get this one...
