FINAL 2024 TWO ROUND NFL Mock Draft: Chargers Get Active
NFL fans, we've made it! Arguably the best time of the year aside from the Super Bowl for a football fan is draft night, and we have arrived there. With the draft kicking off within the next 24 hours, here is my FINAL mock draft with some trades and TWO rounds! I will try and have my very most accurate mock here so don't expect me to go too crazy on trades or anything, but I definitely have a couple in mind! Here. We. Go.
1. Chicago Bears (via CAR) select: Caleb Williams, Quarterback, USC
2. Washington Commanders select: Jayden Daniels, Quarterback, LSU
There has been a debate all draft season over what the Commanders will do here. For a long time, Drake Maye was the clear cut no. 2 pick but over time, things have shifted, and now it feels pretty comfortably like it will be LSU's Jayden Daniels. Both players are close, but Daniels seems like he makes a little more sense here to Washington. He feels more pro ready, is coming off an insane Heisman winning season, and would fit in nicely in the style of offense new OC Kliff Kingsbury likes to run. Daniels is one of the best mobile prospects we've seen ever, genuinely rivaling 2x MVP Lamar Jackson. While his arm isn't insane, it is good enough and he has displayed tremendous accuracy as well. Daniels will slot in right away on day 1 and begin his development for a new era of Washington football.
3. New England Patriots select: Drake Maye, Quarterback, North Carolina
I genuinely thought long and hard here about putting a big trade up here, but after everything I've heard, I don't think the Patriots will end up moving down, even if a huge offer comes there way. The Patriots are at the clear beginning of a rebuild. Their roster is depleted and they have a brand new HC in Jerod Mayo. They have to start building around a young QB, and Maye is that guy. I am a big fan of Maye, and don't fully understand the hate surrounding him. He is a little bit raw, but not really. Maye reminds me a lot of Justin Herbert, who is one of the best QBs in the NFL right now. He has a HUGE arm, is awesome from the pocket, and gives you some good mobility at the position as well, which he doesn't get enough credit for. The Patriots will have to be patient, dropping him into such a bad situation, but he feels like he can genuinely be their next franchise guy, who they have been waiting for ever since Tom Brady left.
4. Arizona Cardinals select: Marvin Harrison Jr., Wide Receiver, Ohio State
Here is another potential trade spot, that I don't have actually winding up that way. I think the Cardinals would maybe make a move if presented the right offer, but they already have a 2nd first rounder this year and it is rare to have the opportunity to select a guy of this caliber. Harrison and Caleb Williams are tied for me for the runaway top prospect in the class. This is probably the best WR prospect I've ever seen. He only has slight knocks to his game, but no clear issue. He has great size, elite route-running and hands, and is as dependable deep down the field as they come. Sure, he isn't a world class speedster, but what does that matter when you are as refined at everything else as he is. With Arizona committing to Kyler Murray long term, what better fit to get him his WR1 which the team is desperately lacking, for the next decade. The Cardinals should feel damn lucky to have finished with the 4th overall pick, and still wind up with the opportunity to get this guy.MOCK TRADE: Los Angeles Chargers send pick #5 to the Minnesota Vikings in exchange for picks #11, #23, and 2025 2nd rounder
5. Minnesota Vikings (via LAC) select: J.J. McCarthy, Quarterback, Michigan
I predicted this trade in my last mock, and I won't switch it now. The Vikings are bound to trade up. I would be MORE shocked if the Vikings did not wind up making a draft day trade in the first round to move up than if the Bears went with someone other than Caleb Williams at 1. That is how sure I am. Will it be at 5? I am less sure, but it feels like the most likely spot TO move up. I do think the Vikings will offer a ransom to the Patriots at 3, but again, I don't see New England budging either way. This leads to the Vikings losing out on Maye, but giving up multiple firsts AND a second next year to move up 6 slots and ensure they get their guy. It has been the worst kept secret in the draft that Minnesota has eyes for McCarthy. With Kirk Cousins gone, the team needs a new franchise QB, and now they might have just found him. While McCarthy does feel like a considerable risk, given a small sample size of him throwing a lot at Michigan, the potential is definitely there. This would be the best possible landing spot for him, as Minnesota has an elite supporting cast and one of the most QB friendly head coaches in the league. If JJ ended up in New England, I'd say he would be a likely bust, but if he ends up in Minnesota, I do think he becomes a great player. Big swing for the Vikings, but one that feels like it will pay off down the road.
6. New York Giants select: Malik Nabers, Wide Receiver, LSU
The Giants are another team that could surely explore a trade up, but I don't think they would outbid the Vikings in any position, leaving them here at 6 with the top 4 QB options all off the board. With no QB really worth it for them here, they go ahead and take the player that some have as their top guy in the draft in Malik Nabers. Nabers has such insane speed, but is also a super refined player other than that, which makes him such a dangerous prospect. The Giants have no juice in their receiving core right now, and that all changes in a big way with Nabers, who reminds me of a former Giant 1st-rounder by the name of Odell Beckham. No one thinks Daniel Jones is the guy of the future for the Giants, but with his salary, he HAS to be on the team this season. Give him a bona fide stud at WR1 for a year and see what he can do, if he fails again miserably, the Giants will be picking high again next year and can get his replacement, and have a true WR1 for that guy as well.7. Tennessee Titans select: Joe Alt, Offensive Tackle, Notre Dame
This is one of the pairings I feel most sure about heading into tonight's draft. Joe Alt is one of the cleanest and safest prospects in the class, and he fills a huge need for Tennesee. The Titans have had an unreal start to the off-season, acquiring so much great talent on both offense and defense to build around second-year promising QB Will Levis. They help him out more, and in a big way here, getting the great pass protector that is Joe Alt to be his blindside protector for the next decade-plus. New HC Brian Callahan was able to lure his dad, the legendary Bill Callahan away from Cleveland to be the Titans' new OL coach. He is one of the best to coach the line ever, and he would do wonders with a prospect with as much talent and promise as Alt. This one feels like a lock to me, given the likely scenario he is still on the board here at 7.
8. Atlanta Falcons select: Dallas Turner, Edge Rusher, Alabama
Off the board goes the first defensive player. The Falcons filled their huge need at QB with the big-time signing of Kirk Cousins, so it feels safe to say QB is not in the cards here. While WR Rome Odunze might be tempting here, Atlanta does have a lot of juice on offense as it is, and they have a big need for pass rush production. Why not add the athletic freak with immense upside in Dallas Turner to their line and hope he can develop into a perennial 10+ sack guy who also brings elite run defense to the table. HC Raheem Morris is a defensive guy, and he could do wonders with Turner. A trade down does not feel out of the question here either.
MOCK TRADE: Chicago Bears send pick #9 to the Las Vegas Raiders in exchange for pick #13 + pick #44 and 148
9. Las Vegas Raiders (via CHI) select: Michael Penix Jr., Quarterback, Washington
BOOM! Here's the shocking trade of the mock, the Raiders moving up for a QB. It has been eerie quiet on the QB rumor front for Vegas. They have one of the worst active QB situations in the league and aren't picking too far down the board, yet there has been nothing I've really heard about them moving up aside from one of the worst kept secrets that HC Antonio Pierce loves Jayden Daniels, who he formerly coached. The Commanders aren't trading out, so where does that leave Vegas? They've done their work on the QB class, and I think Michael Penix is an awesome fit with this team, so they shock everyone, jumping the division rival Broncos to ensure they get the guy they want, while the Bears move back a few slots and pick up some much needed extra capital. Penix has his red flags: age and injury history, but if you can look past those things, he is an awesome prospect. He has a cannon for an arm, with so much zip on his throws. He is one of the best pure throwers of the football I've seen. The Raiders have a team ready to compete given they have the right guy under center, and Penix can start day 1 and win them games, especially with Davante Adams and Jakobi Meyers to throw to. Antonio Pierce and co. make their move.
10. New York Jets select: Brock Bowers, Tight End, Georgia
The Jets are certainly happy to have their pick of Bowers and Washington's Rome Odunze, and while I truly think it could go either way here if both were here, I'm going with my gut and Brock Bowers here. While OT is certainly also in play, I think the team will be satisfied enough with the moves they made in FA to justify passing on some great options at that position for the ultra talented Bowers. This is likely Aaron Rodgers' final year, and the Jets are making moves that really prove they are going all in. Taking Bowers (or Odunze) would echo that, as they try and build the best possible supporting cast around Rodgers. With Garrett Wilson and Mike Williams (FA), I like where the Jets are at receiver. Bowers is an elite receiving option at the TE spot while also bringing awesome blocking skills to the table as well. Rodgers has thrived in the past with a top TE in the fold, and Bowers might end up being the best guy he's ever played with at that position, as just a rookie.11. Los Angeles Chargers (via MIN) select: Rome Odunze, Wide Receiver, Washington
The Chargers made the big trade down, probably with the thought that they'd go and snag either JC Latham or Taliese Fuaga at 11, but they get even luckier, moving down and still being able to snag Rome Odunze, who could have been in consideration had they stayed at 5. Odunze is probably an easy top 5-6 true talent in the class, so getting him outside the top 10 feels almost unfair. Odunze has elite size and speed, and is one of the best pure catchers of the football for a draft prospect I've seen. Truly a special talent, who can be a true WR1 from day ONE. OT remains a big need, but WR is the biggest, with literally just Josh Palmer and a bunch of unproven guys to support elite QB Justin Herbert. The Chargers could not be more thrilled with this outcome.
12. Denver Broncos select: Bo Nix, Quarterback, Oregon
BOOM! A slight shocker for some here, as Denver doesn't move up, but they do wind up snagging their QB of the future in round 1 anyway. Nix has a little Drew Brees to his game, which I'm sure Bronco HC Sean Payton will pick up on. I think the Broncos definitely are going to be working the phones, trying to move up in this draft, but I don't think they will have the ammo to out-bid any of the other teams that might move up for a QB. This one especially stings if Denver was targeting Michael Penix, who the Raiders just jumped up for. The Broncos need a signal caller so bad, they get a little desperate here, as this might be a bit of a reach, but one that will pay-off in the long run if it pans out. Nix is like a Point Guard out there on the football field. He is a really good game manager who can wow you with throws here and there. He is an older prospect, but a high floor guy who could win this team games right out of the gate. SIX QBs go in the top 12 of this draft!!13. Chicago Bears (via LV) select: Byron Murphy II, Defensive Tackle, Texas
After the slight trade down, the Bears go defense after getting their QB at pick 1. A lot of people connect them to FSU's star DE Jared Verse, but I think the Bears go a different direction and snag the top interior presence in the class. Murphy is such a high potential prospect, with legit aspirations to go top 10. He has already showed many flashes of elite potential as a pass rusher from the inside, but is already such a dominant run stuffer. The Bears do still need some help off the edge, but they saw a lot of good things from Montez Sweat after acquiring him at the deadline this past season, and go with the higher talent in Murphy at the end of the day over the slightly bigger need in Verse.
14. New Orleans Saints select: Olu Fashanu, Offensive Tackle, Penn State
While I do have Oregon State's Taliese Fuaga ranked slightly higher, Fashanu feels like the better fit here. The Saints desperately need an LT of the future, and Fashanu IS that. He showed tremendous flashes of both elite pass and run blocking at Penn State, and at one point was considered a near lock to go top 5. He has some of the highest upside of anyone in the whole class, and the Saints take him to be a cornerstone piece in the midst of a retool.
15. Indianapolis Colts select: Quinyon Mitchell, Cornerback, Toledo
Indy could go a number of directions here, including OT with all the talent on the board still, WR in someone like Brian Thomas or Xavier Worthy, or DB, which I have them doing as they take the first corner off the board in Quinyon Mitchell. It feels like a toss-up right now, hours before the draft of who will be the first CB off the board, Mitchell or Alabama's Terrion Arnold. The Colts have been known to take the athletic freak prospects annually under Chris Ballard, and that is what they are getting here with Mitchell. Mitchell has elite size and speed for the CB spot, and played absolute lockdown defense during his time at Toledo. People will knock him for playing lower competition at his school, but sticky coverage translates, and Mitchell has the physical profile to be able to keep up with anyone. The Colts hope they just got a superstar CB1 for the future, to help aid their ailing secondary.
MOCK TRADE: Seattle Seahawks send pick #16 + pick #102 to the Los Angeles Chargers in exchange for pick #23 + pick #37
16. Los Angeles Chargers (via SEA) select: JC Latham, Offensive Tackle, Alabama
The Chargers aren't done yet! With some of the top tackles still falling down the board, LA sees an opportunity to move up and get a guy they would have heavily considered at their original pick (#5) in JC Latham, and they make the move back up to get him. Latham is a huge OT prospect who brings a tough, mauling physicality with him. Everyone I've listened to talks about how new HC Jim Harbaugh and his OC Greg Roman love to build up a strong, absolutely physically dominating line in the trenches, and Latham completely fits that ideology. With RaShawn Slater a core piece on one side, the team now has their guy on the other for the future. Adding a second rounder next year and getting both Odunze and Latham caps off an unreal night 1 for the Chargers.17. Jacksonville Jaguars select: Cooper DeJean, Defensive Back, Iowa
Here's a bit of a shocker here. Not only do the Jags pass on a WR here, but they also pass on most people's CB1B in Terrion Arnold for the versatile Cooper DeJean. I have heard a lot of rumors that DeJean will go higher than most think when it is all said and done, and here he is. The Jags have a depleted secondary, especially after losing CB Darious Williams and S Rayshawn Jenkins in FA. DeJean is an insane athlete and possesses elite versatility, allowing him to probably play outside and slot corner as well as safety at the next level. The Jags, with so many needs in that secondary, are enamored with the possibility of moving DeJean all over wherever they need, and snag him here at 17. Underrated fit here.
18. Cincinnati Bengals select: Xavier Worthy, Wide Receiver, Texas
Another guy I think that will go higher than most expect: Xavier Worthy. The new 40-yard dash king comes off the board here, and walks into one of the most electric offenses in the NFL. With Tee Higgins' future with the team in serious question due to a trade request, the Bengals go ahead and snag a guy who could replace him if need be. Worthy obviously brings downright electric speed to the table, but is more than just that as a WR prospect. Imagine how hard it will be to defend do-it-all Ja'Marr Chase on one side and downright burner Worthy on the other, with the possibility of jump-ball god Higgins still in the fold as well...oh...and Joe Burrow throwing them the football. Love this fit, and will not be shocked if it does end up happening.
19. Los Angeles Rams select: Jer'Zhan Newton, Defensive Tackle, Illinois
This might feel like a lazy mock pick here for the Rams, but if Newton is here, I do expect it to happen. The Rams lost arguably the best defensive player ever this off-season in Aaron Donald as he retired, opening up a GAPING hole in the middle of this defense. Newton will not be able to fill it just himself, but it's a start. Newton already is a really really good pass rushing threat from the inside, with potential to develop even more, and in run defense as well. Sure, it doesn't solve the Donald problem, but Newton is a super underrated prospect who can produce in a big way from day 1, and will be a nice duo with young star Kobie Turner.
20. Pittsburgh Steelers select: Taliese Fuaga, Offensive Tackle, Oregon State
Fuaga is one of my favorite prospects in the class, I have him at/just outside the top 10 in terms of overall true talent prospects. I wanted to have him go much higher than this, but this is just how it works in mock drafts, and Fuaga falls all the way to 20 here. The Steelers would be overjoyed if this happened. They have a lot of directions they could go and so I think their strategy will be to just sit back and see what happens, and it works out very very well for them this go around. Fuaga is one of the best prospects I've seen ever in terms of a run blocking standpoint. He is an insane mauler and was so fun to watch this year at Oregon State. If he can develop further as a pass blocker, this is a future All-Pro. The Steelers got Broderick Jones in the first round a year ago to be their LT of the future, and now they might just have their RT of the future as well. Things are setting up well for Russell Wilson/Justin Fields in the steel city.
MOCK TRADE: Miami Dolphins send pick #21 to the Buffalo Bills in exchange for pick #28 and pick #60
21. Buffalo Bills (via MIA) select: Brian Thomas Jr., Wide Receiver, LSU
The Bills are a team I see working the phones all night, trying to get up as high as they can to snag a replacement for Stefon Diggs (and Gabe Davis). With Brian Thomas falling out of the top 20, the Bills strike a deal with their division rival Dolphins and move up 7 slots to ensure they get him. Thomas is a polarizing prospect. At 6'4 and 205 pounds, Thomas has surprisingly game breaking speed. He is still a work in progress as a pure route runner, but man does he separate well. Josh Allen has arguably the biggest arm in the game, and if Thomas can be developed further, this would be a nasty connection. He reminds me of a supercharged version of guys like DJ Chark, Allen Lazard, or Marquez Valdes-Scantling.
22. Philadelphia Eagles select: Terrion Arnold, Cornerback, Alabama
The 'pick is in' graphic will appear on the screen so fast after the Bills pick if this is the scenario. The Eagles have been rumored to be heavily interested in taking a CB in the first round of this draft, reportedly even exploring move-up scenarios. They cannot fathom the fact that the guy who many have as CB1 in the draft, falls to them at 22 where they don't even have to move up to secure him. Arnold isn't an insane athlete, but man does he play sticky, press-man coverage. The Eagle secondary was a disappointment last season, and they are looking to revamp it here. Arnold would form a great CB tandem with Darius Slay, and if he develops like we think he will, can eventually take over and be this team's lockdown CB1 for the future.
23. Seattle Seahawks (via LAC) select: Troy Fautanu, Offensive Line, Washington
Another team getting their dream scenario. The Seahawks struck a highly valuable trade back deal with the Chargers, and then watch as the guy they were going to take had they stuck at 16 fall into their laps at 23. Fautanu played his college ball down the street from the 'Hawks at UW, and was awesome there, and now doesn't have to go far to play at the next level. Fautanu could go as high as pick 10, and he is tremendous value here at 23 for the 'Hawks, where he can play pretty much any of the 5 positions on the line for the team. Another nice nugget here, Fautanu would be teaming up again with his former OC AND OL coach from UW in Ryan Grubb and Scott Huff, who the Seahawks hired for those same roles under their new regime this off-season. Love this fit.
24. Dallas Cowboys select: Graham Barton, Offensive Line, Duke
If you thought Troy Fautanu was versatile, look no further than Graham Barton. Barton may be THE most versatile player in this class. He has experience at, and can play, all 5 positions on the line, and at a high level. Some have labeled Barton as both the cleanest and safest prospect in the class, a guy who could be a future All-Pro if he is developed well. The Cowboys have some needs on the line, and this pick allows them to fill it in any way they like. Barton can play well at any spot, especially the interior, but the Cowboys have now a ton of versatility as they also have young star lineman Tyler Smith, who is versatile as well. This is a great, smart pick for Jerry Jones and his team. One of my favorite prospects in the class.MOCK TRADE: Green Bay Packers send pick #25 to the Detroit Lions in exchange for pick #29 + pick #61
25. Detroit Lions (via GB) select: Jared Verse, Edge Rusher, Florida State
A rare intra-division first round mock trade, as the Lions move up 4 slots and get a tremendous value in FSU's Jared Verse here. Verse is a guy who could easily go top 8-15, but could also fall to the back half of the first round. It really depends on what positions are flying off the board. Today, I have him falling quite far, and the Lions pounce on him, jumping the Buccaneers. This feels like a classic Lions move at this point. Under GM Brad Holmes, the Lions have been aggressive and take top end talent whenever they can, and it doesn't change here. The Lions don't have many big needs, but pass rush is in fact one of them, and pairing up Verse with young stud Aidan Hutchinson on the other side is insane. Would the Packers let this happen?
26. Tampa Bay Buccaneers select: Laiatu Latu, Edge Rusher, UCLA
The Buccaneers are another team benefitting from the early run on QBs, pushing stud talents down the board. Latu has been a massive riser in mock drafts lately, but in my final one, he gets unlucky and falls much further than he should, right into the laps of the pass rush starving Buccaneers. While he does have his medical question marks, there is no denying Latu's pro ready skillset when he is on the field. He is one of the more refined pass rushing prospects you will see. He has so many moves already, and should be an instant success in the NFL. The Buccaneers are thanking their lucky stars with this one.
27. Arizona Cardinals (via HOU) select: Nate Wiggins, Cornerback, Clemson
Some years, Wiggins would be the first corner off the board, and heck, he still COULD be this year when it is all said and done. Wiggins has elite length and speed for the CB position and showed shutdown ability at times this year, usually being the best player on the field no matter who the opponent was. The Cardinals need some real secondary help and Wiggins can develop into their star CB1 in time. Not a bad first round haul getting a stud receiver and cornerback here.
28. Miami Dolphins (via BUF) select: Amarius Mims, Offensive Tackle, Georgia
After the trade down, the Dolphins still get a guy they like a lot. Mims is my final top end OT prospect in the class available, and he just makes it to Miami, who is in big need of tackle help. Sure, they have Terron Armstead, who is awesome when healthy, but he is getting up there in age, and has NEVER played a full season. It is wise for the Dolphins to think about the future, and they do here by getting Mims. Mims is a massive OT, with surprising athleticism and upside. Mims can learn from Armstead and will probably still get plenty of meaningful reps year 1, but might not be a full-time starter right out of the gate. Smart pick for the future here for Miami.
29. Green Bay Packers (via DET) select: Darius Robinson, Edge Rusher, Missouri
With not many glaring holes in Green Bay, the team decides to do what they do a lot, and trade down to get more capital. Now at 29, the team takes a slight reach on a guy who has been shooting up draft boards of late, in Darius Robinson. Robinson feels like a Packer. Robinson is a versatile big man, who can play on the inside or out. Green Bay drafted edge in Lukas Van Ness last year, and they hope they have a potential lethal DL duo for the future with him and now Robinson in the fold. He may not be a star day 1, but with development, this is a versatile piece for the Green Bay D.30. Baltimore Ravens select: Adonai Mitchell, Wide Receiver, Texas
I know that the Ravens have invested a lot of high draft capital into WR of late, but it still feels like they don't have enough there. Zay Flowers from last year is a stud, but he isn't your typical X receiver. The Ravens still lack that, until now. Adonai Mitchell can come in and BE that, paired with Flowers, Rashod Bateman, and TE Mark Andrews. The Ravens are elite team running the football, that's obvious, but their lack of prowess in the passing game has been what has killed them in the playoffs of late. Mitchell is a huge receiver with fast play speed, underrated route running ability, and elite hands (including top flight jump ball skill). I think I could be pleasantly surprised and see Mitchell go a lot higher than most expect during the draft, but for now, I believe the Ravens are getting quite a steal here at 30.
31. San Francisco 49ers select: Xavier Legette, Wide Receiver, South Carolina
South Carolina just breeds the Deebo Samuel type of WR. As we know, the Niners snagged Deebo Samuel a couple years back. He has panned out into one of the best overall offensive weapons in the league. Fast forward to 2024, the Gamecocks have another guy just like him coming out, and with him sitting here staring the Niners in the face, they go with him. Kyle Shannahan's offense is already so hard to defend, but now enter not one Deebo Samuel, but basically two, to go along with Aiyuk, Kittle, and Christian McCaffrey. Sure, the Niners have bigger needs, but they are a pretty well rounded team who came up JUST short of a Super Bowl win this season. They can afford a luxury pick like Legette. With Brandon Aiyuk's situation in question, this only adds to my reasoning for this pick.
32. Kansas City Chiefs select: Kingsley Suamataia, Offensive Tackle, BYU
I think CB (potentially Kool-Aid McKinstry) and WR are definitely in play here, but the Chiefs clearly and obviously don't have any glaring needs, and can go anywhere they choose here. I have heard a lot of rumors connecting the Chiefs with Suamataia lately, and I'm going with it here. Kingsley can play either OT spot, and has great power and upside from what we've seen. This is a nice luxury pick for the Chiefs, who look to win their THIRD straight Super Bowl in 2024.
